A number of pioneering Physiotherapy services won awards at the 2013 NHS Innovation Challenge Prizes, an event organised by NHS Improving Quality.
A rapid response community falls-prevention team run by Anglian Community Enterprise won in the ‘reducing falls and injuries’ category, receiving a prize of £50,000. Since it’s inception, the programme has halved the number of ambulance call outs per month for older people, and saved an estimated £1.7 million.
Physiotherapist Simba Chandiwana, the program's Integrated Care Manager for Rehabilitation, said the prize was “a just reward for all the outstanding work the team has put in during the past few years”.
In addition, a self-help scheme for patients with pelvic floor problems was highly commended for reducing avoidable attendances in the “primary care” category of the awards.
The service was developed by Physiotherapists at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Dorset. NHS Improving Quality said it has cut waiting times and improved patient outcomes, with up to 50% of patients not requiring any follow-up.
A spokesperson for the service said it uses a model of care known as Fast Assessment, Start Treatment (FAST) where advice about self-help, as well as short courses of physiotherapy, are given to patients as soon as possible after referral.
Sally Sheppard, Physiotherapist and Self-Help Team Lead, attended the awards ceremony and said: “We are very proud to have our model of care recognised and commended alongside so many exciting innovations”.
