Award-winning Virtual Treatment for Pulmonary disease

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

An Edinburgh based Physiotherapy team have been presented with an award for their work delivering virtual care to patients.

The East and Midlothian Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team picked up the Improving Quality accolade at the Advancing Healthcare Awards.

The team delivers pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with “chronic obstructive pulmonary disease” via video conferencing. This technology has enabled clinicians to run classes for patients simultaneously in two locations at one time. Patients are equipped with a specially-designed phone with a screen and matched up with a Physiotherapist who supports them as they practise exercises.

Amanda Stears, Specialist Physiotherapist in the team stated that pulmonary rehabilitation at the Trust has been delivered solely through digital means for the past two years with successful patient outcomes. She states the future intention is to deliver the service directly into the patient’s home, reducing demand on the clinics are lowering waiting times for patients.

“Winning this award highlights just what can be achieved by embracing the use of new technologies in delivering healthcare. The use of this type of innovative, digital technology can increase the number of patients we treat, not just in the one area but across different areas at the same time” said Stears.

CSP to hold physiotherapy benefits event

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Welsh therapists have this week launched an initiative to highlight both the cost-effectiveness and the patient benefits that can occur from physiotherapy.

Representatives from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) aim to highlight the effectiveness of treatment from traditional disorders such as musculoskeletal conditions, to more diverse afflictions such a dementia and urinary incontinence.

The CSP will be holding an event this week to showcase its 10 evidence-based Physiotherapy Works briefings, which provide information on the costs of conditions and the contribution of physiotherapy. These briefings include information on the following:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders – Specifically, the focus will be on the success of self-referral trials. An analysis of self-referral in Scotland found that the average cost of an episode of care was £95.48 for a self-referral compared to £126.17 for a GP referral
  • Urinary incontinence – Studies comparing pelvic floor muscle training to medications has shown the training which physiotherapists can deliver is cheaper and more clinically effective
  • Fragility fractures and falls – Studies have shown that etween 1998 and 2008 there was a 32% reduction in patients admitted to hospital due to falls in the home, 27% in falls in residential homes and of 40% in street falls. Over the same period hip fractures decreased by 3.6%
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – A 26% reduction in hospital re-admission has been found as a result of pulmonary rehabilitation delivered post-COPD
  • Critical care – It has been suggested physiotherapy treatment (as part of a multidisciplinary approach) is integral to promoting lung function, reducing the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia, facilitating weaning and promoting safe and early discharge from the intensive care unit

The CSP state the intention of the event is to showcase the contribution of physiotherapy in conjunction with the part played in multi-agency and multidisciplinary teamwork.

“As well as clinical effectiveness, services need to be able to demonstrate cost effectiveness but in ways that benefit patients” a spokesperson said.

Nottingham Physios launch depression study

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Physiotherapists at the University of Nottingham are launching a new study to test the effects of physical exercise on depression in adolescents.

Researchers in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Physiotherapy are in the process of creating a new exercise programme aimed at a group of young volunteers. The experiment will form part of the Health (Help Enable Active Lifestyles Towards Health) project, a two-and-a-half year study funded by the National Institute of Health Research.

Researcher Tim Carter, said: “Previous work has found that young people with depression or low mood don’t do much exercise and therefore are not getting the potential physical or mental health benefits. A recent study has shown that exercising at individuals’ preferred intensity is more likely to have positive effects on depression levels and keep people interested.”

Half of the participants will undertake the exercise regime in addition to standard NHS mental health care. The other half will be randomly assigned to a control group receiving just the mental health care..

The researchers are looking for 158 young people between 14 and 17 with depression or low mood who have been referred to the child and adolescent mental health services in Nottingham or the rest of the county.

Self-Referral to revolutionise Isle of Man Physio

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

The Isle of Man is revolutionising it’s physiotherapy services by introducing a self-referral system in an attempt to make them more efficient.

The self-referral system means that patients can book themselves directly into physiotherapy services without the need to be seen or referred by a GP first.

Health Minister David Anderson asserts that the system will lead to a more efficient use of services, reducing the wait time for an Initial Assessment to 2-3 days.

Currently, the percentage of patients who did not attend (DNA) stands at around 11%, which therapists state is due to appointments being booked too far into the future. Furthermore, encouraging patients to be more proactive with their treatment is thought to improve their outcomes and make it less likely to forget appointments. It is believed that the DNA rate could fall to 9% with the introduction of self-referral.

Andersen added that by “nipping things in the bud”, conditions can be prevented from worsening in the time waiting for treatment. Early intervention could potentially reduce reliance on other services down the line, such as surgery or treatment as an inpatient, ultimately reducing costs.

Physiotherapists within the service also hope that this process will reduce capacity enough for them to be able to treat the patient through their entire journey. GP’s should also see reduced demand for their services, leading to lower waiting times for patients.

The scheme starts today for patients aged 16 and over with muscle, joint, tendon, ligament or nerve problems which have developed in the past eight weeks. The scheme will extend to those with longer-term conditions in July and will be reviewed at the end of three months.

Online resource launched for Parkinson’s sufferers

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Parkinson Society Canada is collaborating with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association to launch a new resource for patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

The “Physical Activity and Parkinson’s Disease” resource will showcase the benefits of regular exercise and activity in helping manage the symptoms of the disorder.  It provides information on the benefits of aerobic, strengthening, flexibility and balance activities, which are key to improving Parkinson’s symptoms.

Whilst the resource is primarily aimed at patients, there will be tools specifically for all health professionals involved in the patient care. For Physiotherapists, the resource includes a tracking tool to chart and record physical activity and progress.

Joyce Gordon, CEO of Canadian Parkinson Society said “people with Parkinson’s want to do everything they can to maintain their quality of life and to remain independent and physically able for as long as possible. This new resource is designed to help them manage their disease through exercise and staying active”.

The resource will be made available online and in print this month, and will be available in English and French formats.
